The Big Picture

Paradigm Shift exists because people are in poverty and we believe the Church should be on the forefront of solving that problem. The Paradigm Shift Program is a tool that connects business men and women within the church to microentrepreneurs in poor communities. Through business training, discipleship, microcredit and one-on-one mentoring, volunteers engage with developing entrepreneurs, who, in turn, bring economic possibility to their impoverished communities.

OUR VISION

Churches empowered to meet the spiritual and economic needs of the poor in their communities.

OUR MISSION

To train churches to provide business training, microcredit, mentoring and discipleship to the urban poor.

WHO IS INVOLVED?

CHURCHES

The church makes up 1/3 of the world’s population, with influence reaching into every nation. These people have the calling, skills and desire to bring the fallen world back into right relationship with Christ and people back into right relationship with each other – socially, economically and spiritually.

We are 100% church focused. Rooted in love, only churches have the purpose, the power, the people and the place to overcome poverty with lasting solutions.

VOLUNTEERS

Meet Allan. Allan was an experienced businessman in his local South African church and had the heart and desire to tackle poverty through business. Allan recognized the incredible business skills and knowledge already in his church community and also saw the overwhelming poverty in a nearby community. There he saw struggling small business owners barely making ends meet.

Allan wondered—could he connect this wealth of untapped skill and experience he saw laying dormant in his church and match it with the deep poverty at his own doorstep?

Yes. Through Paradigm Shift.

Allan formed a volunteer team at his church and together, they stepped into the local community and met the microentreprenuers who lined the streets of a nearby impoverished community. They invited them to their church’s Paradigm Shift Business Experience Course. The following Saturday, Allan and his team had a room of 30 microentrepreneurs eagerly looking back at them, ready to learn how to grow their businesses.

The volunteers followed up the one day course by meeting with microentrepreneurs weekly. Discipleship began to take place, mentors were called on, skills were transferred and friendships were formed as economic and racial divides were crossed.

ENTREPRENEURS

Meet Phumeza. Phumeza struggled to find a source of income to support her family. But after seeing the need in her community for child care, she decided to start her own quality, affordable preschool. She began her business with a few children in a small shack and no electricity or running water. Phumeza suddenly became an entrepreneur.

It is entrepreneurs just like Phumeza, ones that create businesses as a solution to unemployment, that churches are reaching through Paradigm Shift. Over several months, these entrepreneurs begin to see their businesses explode as they put what they have learned into practice.

How was Pumeza impacted?

BUSINESS GREW

Phumeza’s business has grown to 90 children, in a beautiful cement building, with electricity and indoor plumbing.

FAITH INCREASED

Phumeza faces challenges everyday, including threats to her life because of jealousy of others. Her faith gives her the courage to keep moving forward.

FAMILY SUPPORTED

Phumeza is a mother of two children she is now able to support faithfully, and her husband runs a transport business on the side.

EMPLOYED OTHERS

Due to the growth of Phumeza’s business, she has been able to hire four employees who were previously jobless.

MODEL

Paradigm Shift utilizes four key components, that when experienced together, have the power to see the poor lift themselves out of poverty.
